Spontaneous periodic hypothermia: diencephalic epilepsy.

چکیده
The case of a patient with episodic hypothermia and profuse sweating believed to be due to diencephalic epilepsy is reported. Despite intensive investigations no other manifestations of hypothalamic dysfunction were found. Conventional antiepileptic drugs were without effect but the patient was successfully treated by total sympathectomy.

Spontaneous periodic hypothermia with lipoma of the corpus callosum.
A patient with spontaneous periodic hypothermia who had both a lipoma and agenesis of the corpus callosum is described. Spontaneous periodic hypothermia associated with corpus callosum abnormalities is a distinct entity and although the mechanism underlying the hypothermic episodes is unexplained, the term "diencephalic autonomic epilepsy" does not seem appropriate.
متن کاملDiencephalic epilepsy in a patient with agenesis of the corpus callosum confirmed by computerised axial tomography.
A case of diencephalic epilepsy is described in whom stereotyped attacks of spontaneous hypothermia and diaphoresis occurred over a 20 year period. No abnormality of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis was found, and there was no evidence of an intracranial mass lesion. Pneumoencephalography and computerised axial tomography (EMI scan) demonstrated agenesis of the corpus callosum.
متن کاملHaematological, neurological and psychiatric complications of chronic hypothermia following surgery for craniopharyngioma.
A patient is described who became poikilothermic following surgery for removal of a craniopharyngioma. Episodes of disturbed behaviour, neurological abnormalities, pancytopenia and deranged liver function could be correlated with episodes of more profound hypothermia on a background of a chronically lowered core temperature. The association of pancytopenia and neuropsychiatric disturbances with...
متن کاملSuccessful Use of Therapeutic Hypothermia for Refractory Nonconvulsive Status Epilepticus
Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has rarely been utilized as an adjunct to anticonvulsants in treating patients with refractory convulsive status epilepticus (CSE). However, determining the effectiveness of TH in CSE is difficult due to the unavoidable use of sedative drugs to manage hypothermia. Additionally, the effectiveness of TH has not been studied in patients with refractory non-convulsive s...
متن کاملHypothermia associated with clobazam use in adult epilepsy
Clobazam, a 1,5-benzodiazepine FDA-approved in 2011, is commonly used to treat anxiety and epilepsy. It has not associated with hypothermia until very recently, in a case report involving two pediatric patients. Here, we report the first case of hypothermia development in an adult patient with epilepsy associated with clobazam use. A couple months after starting clobazam, the patient started de...
